As a Certified Vehicle Appraiser, you just never know what type of car or truck you might be asked to evaluate. Recently, a client going through a divorce engaged me to appraise a professionally-built, high quality `99 Mustang “Outlaw 10.5” drag race car. Although missing its engine and transmission, which were both destroyed during an on-track failure, the vehicle was well-constructed and engineered. The challenge with this type of appraisal is to find relevant “comps” or comparables in order to determine a car’s current value, which I was able to do by accessing several online sources that specialize in racing vehicles. The client subsequently asked me to prepare a second report with an estimate of the car’s market value as of April 2017 when it had been completed and was ready to race. That necessitated assessing all of the high performance equipment and assemblies that were installed as well as photographs of the then “fresh” car. A very interesting assignment!
